Equipping

LFL equips young people by focusing on three areas: life skills, education, and employment.  LFL works with various organisations to equip young people and help them make positive contributions to society.

Life Skills

LFL offers two courses to equip young people with life skills.

BETA Course: Graduates of the first Alpha courses requested ongoing education to build on the foundation received in the Alpha course. As a result, LFL offers the BETA course to equip young people to grow emotionally and spiritually. BETA participants have demonstrated positive changes in behaviour and a more positive outlook to life that incorporates forgiveness and empathy for others.

Life Skills Course: This ten-week course addresses a range of issues facing young offenders, with each session dedicated to a specific focus.  Five certified staff administer the course, including a Registered Nurse for the health sessions.  The course has been run successfully at Rangeview Remand Centre and is currently being developed for delivery at Banksia Hill.  The sessions include:

  • Basic Health
  • Childcare / Parenting
  • Communication & Social Skills
  • Exercise & Fitness
  • Cooking & Nutrition
  • Identity / Self-Esteem / Depression / Personal Abuse
  • Gifting-Purpose
  • Finances / Budgeting
  • Personal Relationships
  • Art

Education

LFL works with young people in an educational capacity in varying degrees.  Ensuring young people have education and certifications are key priorities given their significance to sustainable employment.  Current education initiatives include:

Classroom Support: LFL aids young people inside and outside the classrooms of Banksia Hill, providing tutoring and assistance.

RTO: LFL is in the process of becoming a Registered Training Organisation to begin offering Level III certifications.

College: Plans are also underway to open a rural college to equip young people holistically in an alternative setting.  This environment will allow for further rehabilitation and growth intellectually, socially, emotionally, spiritually.

Employment

LFL works with various employers and organisations to assist young people with obtaining a job matching their interests, abilities, and certifications if applicable.  Activities are also offered to introduce various vocational options.
