Encouraging
Visitation
LFL staff and volunteers spend time with young people to gain an understanding about their particular story and to earn their trust and respect. When this is achieved, effective encouragement is possible.
LFL provides mentors and role models to young people in detention through its visitation program that occurring in various settings like evening meals, activity time, through education support in classrooms or in living units during evening activity time.

“Who am I? Who are You?†Course
Another significant dimension in providing encouragement is to help individuals understand and appreciate their own identity and uniqueness. This three-session course considers the implications of birth order, personality type, and learning style (taking into account cultural considerations) of individual participants. As the young people become more aware of themselves, they also recognise and appreciate differences in others resulting in emotional growth and a greater tolerance of others.

“Alpha†Course
The Alpha course is a renowned discussion series for individuals who wish to explore belief systems and their implications. LFL has adapted this series for young offenders and delivers it on a quarterly basis. Each participant applies to attend the course and is free to leave at any stage. The success of the course has been recognised among staff members noting changed behaviour and a more positive approach to life.
